What the judges said

Rail trenches are the preferred way to fit modern commuter railway stations into busy commercial hubs. KiwiRail's new DART 9 Manukau Rail Link Station at Manukau City, Auckland, provides an excellent example of how unobtrusive this form of construction can ultimately be. Designed by Opus International Consultants and built by Leighton Works Joint Venture, the project features secant pile retaining walls to the 7m deep excavation which is propped apart by reinforced concrete capping beams. The 320m long station area is crossed by a precast concrete road bridge and features polished concrete wall panels produced by Nauhria Precast's Monarc process. Buried under one end of the platform is a storm-water detention tank and uplift forces across the base slab are resisted by concrete tension piles. The overall impression from the station platform is one of low-maintenance and permanence, in a project that will be completed on time and within budget. The DART 9 Manukau Rail Link Station is a worthy winner of the Concrete Society's Infrastructure Award.

Manukau Rail Link Project is the construction of the first new addition to the Auckland passenger rail network in 80 years.  It was the construction of a new 1.8km spur railway link connecting Manukau central business area to the North Island Main Trunk Line and the rest of the Auckland rail network.

The site is adjacent to the proposed new Manukau Institute of Technology's campus and will provide real cost saving transport options to and from the revitalized city centre.

The concrete 'below ground' rail station located in Haymen Park has been completed by Leighton Works JV as a variation to the new SH20 Manukau Extension motorway project for the New Zealand Transport Agency.
