What the judges said
The deconstruction of the original 1960s viaduct was a big challenge in its own right, and to combine this with the reconstruction of a new structure on the busiest road in New Zealand made for an even bigger task.
To have successfully completed this in such a busy, tightly constrained and highly visible site is a great achievement. Both activities involved significant and advantageous use of concrete - with a massive overhead launching gantry vital to both operations.
This was an application where there was no real opportunity for a large-span iconic structure - the focus was firmly on replicating what was there with an enhanced structure that would place the minimum disruption on a very busy and fully operational environment.
The design and execution activities associated with this significant concrete structure have achieved this in spades, delivering some world-firsts on the way and restoring this vital backbone of the Auckland motorway network.
