What the judges said

The Firth RibRaft TC3 residential foundation solution responded to an urgent need in Christchurch to provide an innovative and cost-effective concrete flooring system for the highly liquefaction-prone TC3 foundation technical category.

It was an important milestone when MBIE, CERA, Engineering Advisory Groups, insurance companies and project management organisations joined to celebrate excellence in the use of concrete in a foundation solution for the rebuild of Christchurch.

The solution arrived at comprised a robust concrete floor system that could be readily jacked and re-levelled after an event.

The solution was subjected to full scale testing to verify that it could satisfy all service loading and durability requirements, and could be re-levelled without specialist equipment.

At a time when concrete is under unprecedented pressures from alternative construction materials, a fast-tracked but extensive development programme has ensured concrete stays as the preferred residential floor system in Christchurch.
