2014 ArchEng Student Workshop

TECHNOLOGY AWARD
2014 ArchEng Student Workshop
Submitted by: Cement & Concrete Association of New Zealand
Summary:
Under the leadership of Dr Joe Gamman the Cement & Concrete Association of New Zealand (CCANZ) has developed the ArchEng (Architecture / Engineering) student workshop, an outstanding initiative designed to encourage aspiring construction specialists to work together to incorporate the best insights and latest technology into a building design based around concrete.
To date the ArchEng workshop has taken place three times – 2012 at Victoria University of Wellington, 2013 at the University of Auckland, and 2014 at CPIT in Christchurch.
Each year the workshop evolves in terms of the number of participants, the complexity of the design challenge, the calibre of the guest speakers, the relevancy of the site visit and ultimately the quality of the student experience.
Such has been the success of the ArchEng student workshop that BRANZ, the event’s principal sponsor over the past two years, will assume responsibility and implement a new governance model in 2015 – with CCANZ retained as project manager. It is anticipated that this will result in a broadening of scope and a greater degree of government / media interest.
NOTE: CCANZ won a NZ Concrete Society Technology Award – Commendation for the 2012 ArchEng Workshop at the 2013 conference. However, such has been the level of growth in terms of the workshop’s size, third party interest and overall influence that it was deemed worthy of re-entry by CCANZ in 2015.
What the judges said:
The ArchEng student workshop was considered to be a fantastic initiative two years ago when it received a commendation in the 2013 NZ Concrete Society Awards. It stood out previously as an outstanding educational initiative that encouraged architectural and engineering students to work together to incorporate the best insights and latest technology into a building. It was entered again in 2015 to demonstrate the progress and overall success.
The judges were unanimous that the ArchEng programme has now been validated and the experience and outcomes have delivered real value and set a springboard for enhanced creativity and collaboration in the future. The leadership shown by CCANZ in devising, delivering and further developing this programme is a significant contribution to our industry and to NZ in general.
