Allied Concrete Environmental Product Declaration

Summary:

Allied Concrete decided to expand its environmental and sustainability programme in 2014 by applying for an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its concrete made with Holcim Cement.  Holcim NZ Ltd, through its links with Holcim International, is part of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (Cement Sustainability Initiative) WBCSD CSI EN15804.  Allied Concrete decided that this initiative fitted neatly with our own strategic decision to benchmark and improve our business with regards to its environmental performance, based on a quantitative, science-based approach called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).  Through Holcim International’s membership of the WBCSD CSI, Allied Concrete had access to a new LCA Tool that enabled us to analyse our, then, most recent calendar year (2013) production based on the latest standard covering LCA of construction products – EN15804: 2013, and detailed Product Category Rules (PCRs) for application of LCA to concrete, published by The International EPD® System.
