Summary:
Built in 1929, Victoria Wharf consists of “approach” and “cargo” sections totalling 3,000m2. The historic wharf structure required significant repair to return it to a safe condition for recreational activities. With full replacement precluded due to budgetary constraints, Auckland Council invited design and construct proposals to upgrade the wharf to modern design standards and reopen the full wharf for public access.
Downer NZ, together with Novare Design and BBR Contech developed an innovative proposal to leave the original structure in place and use it to support construction of a new flat slab deck over top. By repairing the critical underwharf supporting piles and beams and employing innovative design techniques in the new structural deck overlay, we strengthened and upgraded the wharf to a modern mixed-use facility for $6M - less than half the estimated cost of full replacement.
This project merits recognition as an outstanding achievement in the field of concrete due to the innovative concrete design and construction procedures used to restore a dilapidated yet important historic community asset, maintain adjacent commercial activities and minimise public disruption. This sustainable solution also circumvented the need to demolish, transport and dispose of up to 3,000 tonnes of demolition waste material.
