Summary:
Allied Concrete has promoted different innovative concrete construction solutions for some time and these solutions can highlight deficiencies in the regulatory process that impinge upon the easy uptake of the system in question.
The use of steel fibre reinforced concrete is probably the best example of this. There is a serious lack of understanding in the industry as to how steel fibre floors work, their design assumptions present challenges to Engineers not used to steel fibre design, and because Local Authorities have become risk averse following on from the Leaky Building problem, they are very reluctant to sign off any alternative solution based systems.
The turn-around time for design and approval also interrupted the smooth flow, and impeding easy uptake. Allied identified significant roadblocks in the use of steel fibre reinforced slabs for non-specific design applications. To provide the construction industry with the opportunity to use a cost effective alternative to the acceptable solutions defined in the Building Code, Allied obtained a CodeMark for steel fibre reinforced concrete. This certification removes all of the approval hurdles that an alternative solution can bring about, easing the way for what is an innovative and economic alternative to conventionally reinforced slabs on grade.
